DS Smith has announced a €13.4 million investment to upgrade its corrugated packaging production facility in Grenaa, Denmark, aimed at strengthening its capacity to supply fibre-based packaging solutions in Northern Europe.
The investment focuses on enhancing converting and printing capabilities at the plant, including the installation of a new rotary die-cutting line designed for flexographic printing on corrugated board. The new system features five printing units and a Göpfert Rotary Die Cutter 16/28 High Board Line equipped with servo-driven technology, vacuum sheet transport, and automatic register control.
The equipment is designed to improve accuracy and efficiency in corrugated packaging production while supporting faster changeovers between different packaging formats. The technology enables the manufacture of more complex die-cut designs, allowing corrugated board to be cut, creased, and shaped into customised packaging structures used across industrial, e-commerce, and food and beverage supply chains.
According to DS Smith, the upgraded line is intended to deliver greater precision and consistency in packaging output, which is increasingly important as customers adopt automated packing and logistics systems. Packaging supplied to automated production environments must maintain tight tolerances to ensure compatibility with high-speed filling and handling operations.
Kristian Eriksen, Sales Director at DS Smith Denmark, noted that the growing automation of packing and logistics processes is increasing demand for consistent packaging quality and precision. The company expects the investment to support these requirements while improving operational efficiency at the site.
Following the upgrade, the Grenaa facility is expected to increase its production capacity by up to 15 million square metres of corrugated board annually. The additional capacity is also intended to support shorter delivery times and greater supply chain stability for customers.
